Cantaloupes thriving thanks to the heat

While we’re all trying to beat the heat, the cantaloupes near Rocky Ford are thriving because of the warm temperatures.

The cantaloupe crop has had it’s fair share of a rough season. It’s lasted through storms, hail, and a freeze since being planted in April.

Now, the heat is helping the cantaloupes grow from about a golf ball-sized to baseball sized melons in a matter of days.

Cantaloupe farmers say not only does the heat help the famous melons grow in size, but also in flavor.

“The hotter the days, the cooler the nights it actually puts more sugar in the fruit, and that’s what creates the good, sweet Rocky Ford cantaloupes that everyone around here is accustomed to and loves around this area,” Michael Hirakata said.

This crop is set to be harvested and on store shelves by July 21st.
