Ways to stay safe outdoors in the heat

Lots of people in the Springs were outside on Monday battling the heat and officials are hoping that they are staying prepared.

It was a great day to hike, but emergency officials want to urge people not to forget about safety. It can only take a few minutes to get overheated. And the danger of having a heat stroke is on the rise this time of year.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department recommends that hikers prepare themselves before hitting the trails.

“Hiking in this weather is permitted. Just make sure you do precautionary preparatory things. You bring your cell phone, you tell people where you are going, you hydrate before and make sure you drink a lot of water,” said Captain Steve Wilch with Colorado Springs Fire Department.

Experts also suggest that you stay away from sugary drinks as well as alcohol because they can dehydrate you.
