Trails and roads closed in North Cheyenne Canon Park for road repairs

Several trails, roads and parks are temporarily closed in North Cheyenne Canon Park for repaving.

Crews are filling potholes and repaving North Cheyenne Canon road. The road will be closed Monday starting at 6 a.m. until Saturday at 8 p.m.

“It’s congested, but the improvements need to be done,” said Michael Douglas.

People trying to hit the trails are being rerouted.

“It’s a little inconvenient, but all the construction workers were really nice and redirected us. We were trying to go to the visitors center that’s a half-mile up the road, but that’s just not possible this morning,” said Kristin O’Donohue.

Closures include the Columbine Trail, Mt. Cutler Trail, Mt. Muscoco Trail, Spring Creek Trail, Silver Cascade trail and Helen Hunt Falls are closed.

Gold Camp Road will remain open, as well as recreational access to some trails and Pike National Forest. Other open areas include Captain Jacks, High Drive, Seven Bridges Trail, St Mary’s Falls and Buckhorn.

The paving project is estimated to cost $435,000 and is funded through the voter approved 2C ballot measure from last November.

“I definitely feel like the road repairs are necessary. The roads here are a lot worse than towns we’ve previously lived in. So, it definitely seems like it’s a good call,” said O’Donohue.

The northern portion of the park will remain open, with vehicular and recreational access to the gravel parking lot at Gold Camp Road at North Cheyenne Canon Rd at the west end of the park.

While portions of the park will remain open, it is recommended that residents and visitors consider visiting other great Colorado Springs parks in the area, including Bear Creek Caon Park, Stratton Open Space and Red Rock Canyon Open Space.
