Fort Carson fire is fully contained

A fire on Fort Carson is now 100% contained. It burned less than 1000 acres.

The fire was in the middle of a training range on post, near the intersection of Highway 115 and Turkey Creek Road.

Fort Carson says there was no training going on when the fire started. The post believes it was caused by lightning and that the fire smoldered in the tall grass until the flames were whipped up by gusty winds on Wednesday.

Fire lines were established and the 4th Engineer Battalion was released from its firefighting duties.

Fire fighters from Fort Carson , El Paso County Wildland, Colorado Springs Fire Department and the US Air Force Academy fought the fire.

Forestry hand crews from Wyoming, Buena Vista and Canon City were on site directly attacking the fire.

There was no threat to people or structures.
