Two people, including a child, recover from mountain lion attack

A 5-year-old and his mother are recovering after facing down a mountain lion outside a condo in Pitkin County.

The boy was playing outside when the mountain lion attacked.

His mother told KDVR in Denver that she heard his cries and ran out to fight the animal.

Neighbors say that mountain lions are a common sight. One ranger said the mom actually did the right thing by standing her ground.

“Make them uncomfortable; we want them to have a fear of humans and that’s their best chance at remaining wild,” said Matt Robbins with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The boy is now at Children’s Hospital in Denver, recovering from head and neck injuries.

His mother suffered gashes to her hands and leg. Both are expected to recover fully.

Two mountain lions were found near the area and were killed by officials.
