High fire danger returns to region

Scorching heat and dry conditions over the past few days are quickly turning grass from green to brown, and increasing the danger of wildfires across the area.

The most obvious example of that is the ongoing wildfire in a training area deep inside Fort Carson.

No structures are threatened at this time by the 1000-acre fire, but smoke drifting across the area is causing breathing problems for many people.

CSFD Wildfire Mitigation Program Coordinator Amy Sylvester says it’s a good time for property owners to evaluate their vegetation and mitigate any high risks.

Sylvester says residents in Colorado Springs can meet with one of their consultants free of charge to prioritize what fuels are most in need of attention.

The city will even send out trucks to haul away any trimmings made to lower the risk of a wildfire.
