Small plane crashes in southern Colorado, killing 3

A small plane has crashed in a remote part of southern Colorado, killing three people.

An aerial photography company owns the Cessna 320 that went down Wednesday afternoon, less than a mile from the single-runway airport near the historic mining town of Creede.

Mineral County coroner Charles Downing says a witness reported that the plane sounded like it was having engine trouble and appeared to be trying to land at the airport. It crashed in a small gulley near the Rio Grande River.

Downing identified the victims as 51-year-old pilot Jere Ferrill of Castle Rock, 17-year-old David Louwers of Longmont and Mykhayl Sutton.

The plane was owned by Rocky Mountain Aerial Surveys of Longmont.

Creede is the only town in the county and is surrounded by national forest.
