Water channel eating away COS backyards

Colorado Springs storm water managers were assessing storm damage on Tuesday.

Emergency repairs are planned for a channel along Sand Creek, specifically at Maizeland and Wold Streets, but a long term repair project is still several months away.

The majority of the $250,000 project will be funded by FEMA.

The agency agreed to provide the funding last year, after inspecting damage from a previous flood that washed out part of a concrete embankment.

Monday evening, rushing water eroded nearly ten feet of soil from the backyard of one home on Wold, including the fence and several trees.

Stormwater crews took a look at the damage on Tuesday and will be actively working to make emergency repairs.

“They will be working to restore the channel bank lining on an emergency basis through this week and next week,” said Brian Kelley, Stormwater Projects Program manager.

Construction for a permanent fix is expected to begin in September.
