Presidential hopefuls, Southern Coloradans talk gun control

In the wake of the Orlando massacre, both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are on the campaign trail, talking guns.

On Wednesday morning, Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy started filibustering in the Senate to convince his GOP colleagues it’s time to pass gun safety legislation nationwide. Murphy was elected to the Senate one month before the Sandy Hook Elementary Massacre in Newtown.

Gun safety advocate and Clinton supporter Steve Meyer is tired of the talk.

“The world is looking to America and saying what the heck are you people doing?,” Meyer said.

One local gunsmith argues the other side misunderstands the problem.

“The problem is in the hearts of men,” Dirk Sheffer, the gunsmith at Paradise Sales in Colorado Springs, said. “When there is evil in their hearts, it doesn’t matter if they have a rifle. They can do as much damage with a knife, a bomb or a rock. If you have a pen, is it the pen’s fault that you misspelled a word or is it you who was wielding the pen? It’s the same with any tool at all.”

But, Meyer, a father of a first responder and Moms Demand Action member contends this latest call to action cannot be silenced.

“It’s a stain on America, frankly,” Meyer said. “It’s a stain on our political process. It’s a stain on the citizenry who don’t want to go out to a theater or a church or a mall and risk getting shot by a lone madman.”
