Ms. Betty’s breakfast: Cooking up inspiration in Pueblo

A Pueblo woman who’s on a limited income is literally cooking up inspiration every week. Everyone knows her as Ms. Betty.

“I get up at 6 o’clock in the morning and I start cooking right away,” said Betty Trujillo, or Ms. Betty.

Ms. Betty is 77 years old and she loves to cook.

“Here is breakfast for my little trash haulers, I love those guys and I feed them every Wednesday,” Betty said.

It’s an unlikely tradition, but it’s not a new one. Ms. Betty has made breakfast for the guys who pick up her trash for the last 30 years.

“When I first came across Ms. Betty it touched my heart to see her walk out with the tray of food, I’ve never seen anything like that. There’s so much madness in the world, so someone with a big heart and good soul, it shows that there’s still good people out there,” said Troy Aragon, employee of A Affordable Disposal.

“I give them a lot of food! Not just a tiny little bit,” said Ms. Betty.

“You never know what you’re going to get, but it’s always very good,” said Mike Ney, another employee of A Affordable Disposal.

“They’re angels. They leave their wings and halos inside the truck,” Ms. Betty said.

Aragon shared a photo of Ms. Betty on Facebook, which got a lot of attention. The post even inspired another good deed. An anonymous admirer wrote Mrs. Betty a letter and threw in a $300 donation.

“She’s not here because she’d like to remain anonymous, but the letter says, “Dear Ms. Betty, you make our world a better place with your big heart, generosity and kindness,” Aragon said.

“It felt good to give that to her because we know she could really use it,” Ney said.

No doubt it’s a very special relationship between a woman and the guys taking care of her trash.

“Pray that I stay in good health so I can keep feeding you!” said Ms. Betty.
