Orlando fuels newest round of gun control debate

36 hours after the Orlando nightclub massacre, the calls for stricter gun laws began.

Colorado Springs mother of two and Moms Demand Action member Annabel Kirwan took the lead in Southern Colorado.

“There are no words as a mother, as an American citizen for what happened there,” Kirwan said. “I’m horrified but I’m not that surprised. You have people on terror watch lists that can’t get on a plane, but can go buy a gun.”

Gun store owner Paul Paradis believes one can’t blame the AR 15 that Omar Mateen used to carry out the carnage.

“A firearm is a firearm,” Paradis said. I”m not going to blame the gun like liberals do, when it’s a person.”

Moms Demand Action formed after the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary that killed 20 first graders and six adults in Newtown, Connecticut. The group now has chapters in all 50 states.

“Nothing seems to change after every massacre after every mass shooting, the gun laws don’t change,” Kirwan said. “The fact of the matter is people are allowed to walk around in this country and access military assault weapons.”

Paradis believes mass shootings are all too commonplace and advocates for more guns to stop future attacks.

“We are going to see this as long as we have gun-free zones,” Paradis said, “as long as we don’t have some members of society who are carrying a firearm that are willing to defend other people as well as themselves.”
