Pueblo group raising awareness to stroke prevention

A group in Pueblo joined hands in support of stroke education and treatment at the Stroll for Stroke event Saturday morning.

Strokes are the 5 th leading cause of death in the U.S. each year, according to the CDC.

Survivors and competing runners started the 5k run and walk around 8 a.m.

St. Mary Corwin’s Stroke program coordinator Ashley Trujillo said Pueblo has double the stroke mortality numbers than the Colorado average.

She said because of that and with the ability to prevent strokes, it is important for people to recognize their importance.

“80 percent of strokes are preventable. I think the community doesn’t realize that, and we just need to raise awareness and together we can all work to improve getting treatment,” said Trujillo.

Trujillo added that strokes are the leading cause of long-term disability in the nation.
