Obama endorses Clinton; Sanders meets with POTUS, stays in race
Sen. Bernie Sanders declines to be defeated.
“I look forward to meeting with her in the near future to see how we can work together and defeat Donald Trump.”
The Vermont senator met with President Obama at the White House Thursday.
Sanders promised to work with Hillary Clinton as she gears up for the general election. But he vows to stay in the race at least until Washington, D.C. completes the primary phase of Decision 2016 next Tuesday.
Hours later, the president came out with his endorsement.
“I’m with her,” Obama said. “I’m fired up and I can’t wait to get out there and campaign for Hillary.”
As the 44th president preaches unity, Sanders’ supporter Sally Briggs says she won’t listen.
“The party means nothing, it’s just a club,” Briggs said. “Bernie supporters are not going to vote for Hillary because she’s a Democrat. They’re not going to vote for Hillary so Trump doesn’t get elected. I’d rather have Trump than Hillary. She scares me as a person.”
One Clinton supporter and longtime Democrat backed Sanders at the start of the primary, but now he’s urges him to exit and accept defeat.
“It’s obvious that he lost,” Roger Cortez said. “He has to face that. It’s time for me and others to get behind Hillary Clinton and unify the Democratic Party and bring us back together again.”
Briggs believes the political revolution that Sanders leads is much more than a campaign to win the White House.
“The movement has been really good, it’s woken up a lot of people and we’re not going back to sleep,” she said.
