UPDATE: Three rescued from Arkansas River

The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office says three people have been safely rescued from the Arkansas River near the Pueblo Reservoir.

A 17-year-old boy, 17-year-old girl and 13-year-old boy were rafting just east of the dam and got into trouble. They were each on individual rafts when they snagged on a tree. The teens lost their rafts but were able to cling to the tree. One of the teens used a cellphone to call 911.

Rescuers used ropes to pull all three people to shore.

“They are incredibly lucky because sometimes people get pulled under the tree and aren’t able to get on top of it. They are incredibly lucky and we are so happy it had a happy ending,” said Monique Mullis, Park Manager for Lake Pueblo State Park.

The victims were being evaluated by EMTs. They did not suffer any injuries.

Mullis said she had been considering sending out an advisory warning people of increased danger on the Arkansas River. Warm temperatures are melting snow in the high country, which is increasing runoff and water levels in the Arkansas River. She said after Tuesday’s incident, she’ll be sending out an advisory soon.

The National Weather Service issued a warning this week stating parts of the Arkansas River between Canon City and Leadville could reach flood stage this week.

Mullis offered this advice for people heading out onto the river:

Always wear a life jacket.
Carry a cell phone.
Never go alone; always go with someone else.
If you aren’t a strong swimmer, stay away from the river — even if you have a life jacket
