KRDO to broadcast Pikes Peak Hill Climb documentary
KRDO NewsChannel 13 will present a powerful film on three weekend days in June which captures the legacy, historical moments, and the contributions of individuals who have played prominent roles in the history of The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, Brought to you by Gran Turismo.
“RACE TO THE CLOUDS: 100 YEARS IN THE MAKING”- a three-year long production by Windstar Studios in Colorado Springs, celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Race to the Clouds, America’s second oldest motorsports event. This year’s 94th running of the race will take place on Sunday, June 26.

High-speed racing, beautiful scenery, thrills and spills, and record finishes define the most prestigious Hill Climb in the motorsports world that began in 1916, created by Spencer Penrose to promote the construction of the Broadmoor hotel and the Pikes Peak Highway.
For a century, the world’s most demanding motorsports hill climb has attracted fearless competitors who have made it to the top to triumph on Pikes Peak, including the greats of American motorsport – Mario Andretti, Parnelli Jones, Roger Mears, Al Unser, Al Unser, Jr., Louis Unser, Bobby Unser, Rick Mears and scores of others, including generations of racing families with names like Dallenbach, Unser, Donner, and Vahsholtz, along with international icons Rod and Rhys Millen, Ari Vatanen, Per Eklund, Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima, Sebastien Loeb and Michele Mouton, the first woman to capture a championship on Pikes Peak.
Windstar Studios, with invaluable teamwork by Associate Producers Don Sanborn, Vice-President of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb Historical Association and Mitch Snow, Director of Promotion and Legacy of the Hill Climb, has produced a dazzling 90-minute production that will intrigue and inspire its viewers. Sanborn is the race historian and competed in the race along with his father and uncle.
Snow, who has seen every Hill Climb since 1995, joined the Hill Climb staff in 2012 as an intern and was appointed to his current position in 2014 by PPIHC Chairman Tom Osborne. Snow has his sights set on a degree from Colorado State University in Fort Collins along with his indispensable role in the staging of the Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. He conducts his job with an unmatched wealth of background and knowledge of the race.
The film, according to Windstar President Dane Scott, is one of the most challenging and demanding efforts conducted by the prestigious studio. The team conducted 30 interviews and sorted through 1500 hours of footage during several hundred hours of effort and five months of editing to produce the final show. The film is directed by Windstar’s Patrick Bohnen and edited by Kevin Pinski.
