High school teen upset over school’s prom policy; wasn’t allowed to invite her girlfriend
A Colorado Springs high school graduate is upset with the administration after she wasn’t allowed to bring her girlfriend to prom.
Kailyn Harris, 18, said she wanted to speak about her experience now that she’s graduated and no longer fears retaliation from Pikes Peak Christian School.
“I wanted to bring my girlfriend to prom. I wasn’t allowed to do it,” she said.
She blames a rule change in the parent/student handbook.
“There was a rule change that guests must be of opposite gender to dances,” she said.
And because of the private school’s small population, she believes the rule change was directed at her.
KRDO NewsChannel 13 attempted to contact administrators at Pikes Peak Christian for an interview, but those administrators never answered over the span of several days.
But since the school is private and does not receive federal funding, the policy is legal.
“It’s not a surprise. It’s heartbreaking and it’s sad,” said Amanda Henderson, with the Interfaith Coalition of Colorado. “Because it’s a private, religious school, they don’t have the same requirements that a public school would have.”
Harris said she isn’t considering legal action, she’s only talking about the issue so that others in her situation won’t feel alone.
“For anyone going through a similar situation, maybe in a school or any institution where they felt discriminated, know that they’re not alone,” she said.
