Woman arrested in death of 3-month-old son in Golden

A 21-year-old woman has been arrested in the death of her 3-month-old son in Golden.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says deputies called to a home May 20 found the baby boy unresponsive and not breathing. He was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Investigators say an autopsy determined that the baby died of injuries consistent with abuse. The mother, Bethany Joy Smith, was arrested Friday on suspicion of first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death.

No other information was released, and booking documents do not indicate if Smith has hired an attorney.
