812 Cadets graduate from Air Force Academy
More than 800 cadets received their diplomas from the Air Force Academy Thursday morning.
Thousands packed Falcon Stadium to cheer on the graduating class of 2016. It’s a moment that one cadet says will stick with him forever.
“The past four years they’ve faced challenges mentally and physically,” said 2nd Lt. Brock Flieger.
The past four years they’ve faced challenges mentally and physically.
“It was tough, just getting through each year was a different challenge. Freshman was really tough. Sophomore academics also,” said 2nd Lt. Damon Kirkpatrick.
The graduating class is very unique, 22 percent of the cadets are women and 24 percent are minorities. Only 78 percent of the original class made it through all four years.
President Barack Obama congratulated every cadet and thanked them for their service.
The tradition of the hat toss is a proud moment for many.
“As soon as General Williams said ‘you’re dismissed’ everything slowed down. I threw my hat in the air and just looked up and saw the Thunderbirds roar right over, it was incredible,” said Flieger.
Kids rushed to the field to grab the caps.
“I got 20 bucks in this hat,” said one kid.
The Thunderbirds put on a performance.
“I have the image recorded in my mind, the hats in the air, the Thunderbirds flying over. It was the best feelings ever,” said Kirkpatrick.
“All my friends that i’ve made here all the four years, I’ve suffered with them. We’ve gone through hard times just the best thing in the world today,” said 2nd Lt. Scott Gray.
Cadets say they’re ready take on the role of second lieutenants.
“I’m unbelievably thankful and excited I’m done. I get to start a new adventure, I can’t wait,” said 2nd Lt. Kaitiln Ellwein.
