Man accused of murdering former Colorado Springs firefighter makes first court appearance
A man accused of murdering a former Colorado Springs firefighter made his first appearance in court on Tuesday.
Gustavo Torres-Gonzalez, 43, was arrested on May 22 in the Black Forest area. He is accused of shooting and killing Daryl Ritz May 16 inside a home on Judge Orr Road in the Falcon area.
The District Attorney said in court Tuesday that no charges have been filed yet because it is a, “very intense and active investigation with multiple theories.” The DA asked for another hearing to allow time for charges to be filed.
Defense attorneys said charges should have been filed by now. They also said that there has been extensive media coverage and asked about the possibility of a gag order .
A judge ordered another hearing for 8:30 a.m. June 7 to review charges against Torres-Gonzalez.
Torres-Gonzalez is being held without bond at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center.
He wore a cast on his right arm in court Tuesday. Detectives said he was injured while resisting arrest and was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
Ritz was a truck driver for the Colorado Springs Fire Department and volunteered in the Children’s Hospital burn victims unit.
