Hundreds of suspected illegal pot grows in Colorado Springs

Busts at suspected illegal marijuana grows are becoming the new normal, especially in Pueblo County. It seems that Colorado Springs is relatively quiet, but it turns out, hundreds of illegal home grows are happening within city limits.

Property manager Carolyn Rodgers made that discovery for herself just last week.

“There were pots and lights. It was going to be a big operation and this house was truly beautiful. The big question when clients call, which is a big red flag, is, ‘Is there an unfinished basement?'” Rodgers said.

Investigators confirm that basements in Colorado Springs may be filled with illegal plants.

“We’ve been making quite a few seizures within the city. We’re just not advertising it as other agencies may,” said Lt. Mark Comte, with the Metro Vice Narcotics Division.

In the first three months of 2016 the division seized more than 258 pounds of marijuana from illegal grows. Investigators also confiscated 2 and 1/2 pounds of illegal edibles and 11 pounds of hash oil.

“I’ve been at homes with more than 100 plants, where mold is thick on the walls. They drive it across the borders or send it in packages through Fed Ex,” Comte said.

Packages filled with up to 4 pounds of marijuana were discovered at post offices in Colorado Springs.

“When there’s money involved, especially with drugs, you’re going to have cartel involvement. We may see some significant operations in the future,” Comte said.

The majority of illegal grows in Colorado Springs have been reported by neighbors. If you suspect any illegal activity you’re asked to contact police.
