Memorial Day observances at Evergreen Cemetery

The Evergreen Cemetery hosted several Memorial Day events Monday.

U.S. flags line gravestones at Evergreen Cemetery. The annual tradition honors those who’ve paid the ultimate sacrifice.

“This is where we should be. To honor the people and military who’ve given their lives,” said Marilyn Price.

A different type of tradition is bringing some veterans together.

“If a penny is laying down on the tombstone that individual is giving respect. A nickel placed means that person served a boot camp with the deceased. The dime means the individual served somewhere in the world with that individual,” said Lorin Price, a veteran.

Michael Olsy visited his brother, they served in the Vietnam war in together.

“Just remembrance of him and what he did for us and those who gave us their lives for us. Our freedom, especially all the troops over seas.” said Olsy.

Some people who visited the cemetery didn’t know anyone. Instead they wanted to educate the youth about the importance of Memorial Day.

“I think it’s just good to instill in them. We shouldn’t take our freedom for granted. We need to always honor the military and the sacrifice they gave us,” said Alysha Housari.

Olsy says it’s humbling to see so many flags, flowers and coins cover the gravestones.

“It was a war that I was trained to go to and free the people. It’s taken many years but now they’re free because of us and our troops in the world,” said Olsy.

The Pikes Peak Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution also had a presentation including an honor guard musket fire.
