Both lanes of I-25 south of Pueblo open after being closed for accident cleanup

Both lanes of I-25 near Colorado City were declared open around 1:20 p.m. Friday.

Both directions were closed Friday morning while crews cleaned up a tanker truck accident from Thursday.

The work had to be postponed Thursday afternoon because of thunderstorms.

The southbound lanes of I-25 were closed most of the day on Thursday after the tanker truck caught on fire after the driver veered the vehicle off the road and crashed, troopers said.

Drivers going south had to use a dirt road to go around that part of the interstate.

State Patrol said the flames consumed the cab of the truck.

After the fire was put out, crews still had to worry about the explosive materials, such as butane, in the truck.

“Obviously with hazardous materials, the tanker is actually filled with butane or propane, and our technicians have actually examined the structure. They determined the structure may have been compromised,” CSP Sgt. Steve Ortiz said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
