Severe thunderstorm slams Colorado Springs

Severe thunderstorms brought large hail, and a lot of it, to much of Colorado Springs Thursday.

The focus of the severe weather was on the eastern half of the city.

In some neighborhoods hail the size of quarters fell, damaging spring gardens.

In other areas, the hail piled up several inches deep making travel difficult.

The severe weather wasn’t confined to El Paso County. It forced a ground stop at DIA so that plows could clear hail from the runway. Travelers are urged to check with their airline before heading to the airport to catch a flight.

Radar showed a line of strong to severe storms stretching from north to south from just southeast of Pueblo, across eastern El Paso County and the Denver metro area, into southeast Wyoming as of 3 p.m.

A tornado watch that was issued for Colorado Springs and Pueblo has been cancelled, but it remains in effect for counties further east until 7 p.m.
