Man rescues strangers from house fire in Security-Widefield

A fire displaced a family living in Security-Widefield on Sunday night.

David Margan returned to his home Monday morning to find it buried in rubble and debris. He suffered second degree burns attempting to put out the fire.

“I was trying to get the fire out. I hooked up a garden hose and sprayed it,” said Margan.

It took 25 firefighters 30 minutes to contain the fire on Bella Vista Lane. Firefighters said there was major damage to the home. The Red Cross provided the family with shelter for the evening since they couldn’t return to their home.

Wayne Frazier was driving by the home when he noticed some smoke. He said he felt something wasn’t right so he drove around the home several times to assess the smoke.

Frazier said the smoke wasn’t going down, it was getting worse, and he started to see flames. That’s when he asked his wife to call 911 and he raced toward the home.

“There was some guy, he was back there trying to put out the flames and I asked if anyone was inside and he didn’t really know. So that’s when I took off. There was an old man upstairs, eating dinner at the kitchen table with his back to the window and the fire was just below him. He had no idea what was going on. I grabbed his walker, helped him down the stairs and into his electric wheelchair,” said Frazier.

Frazier went back in and looked for another person inside the home. It turned out that person was already outside. Then, he went back inside to help rescue the family’s dogs and cats.

After, he ran over to the neighbors’ homes that were closest to the flames and helped them get out. Then, Frazier took off. When he did an interview with KRDO NewsChannel 13, he said he still didn’t even know the name of the man he rescued.

Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the fire.
