Dear suffers from delusional disorder, unable to stand trial

for joining us for krdo newschannel 13 at 10. i’m heather skold. and i’m james jarman. first tonight.. the search for justice. we’ll have to wait at least a few more months to see the admitted planned parenthood shooter will go to trial. a judge ruled robert dear must spend at least 90 days at the state mental hospital in pueblo. judge gilbert martinez made that ruling today. another hearing for dear is scheduled for august 11th. for now, dear will undergo treatment in pueblo. we have team coverage tonight. krdonnewschan nel 13’s bart bedsole is looking into why the judge made this ruling. but we start with emily allen who’s has more on what treatment dear will go through while at the state hospital in pueblo. inside these walls… doctors will try to fix robert dear’s delusional disorder. he believes the f-b-i has been after him for twenty years. 2:30 there is nothing you can do to change their thinking larry nutter is a retired mental health clinician… he worked for years with inmates suffering from mental illness. nutter says robert dear will go through rounds of drugs… but it won’t cure him. 2 – 0:26 i absolutely doubt it will work at all instead… nutter believes dear will continue to bounce back and forth between treatment and court hearings for years… until the prosecution concedes to not guilty by reason of insanity. 9:02 they never change their delusional disorder, it just stays. aurora theater shooter james holmes licked the walls and ate paper cups. clip 2 – 6:17 i don’t give an f about you chuck cheese gunman nathan dunlap smeared feces on himself… and the walls of his cell. and he lashed out in court… clip 2 – 6:58 nathan crying but nutter says it’s the people who act crazy… who are usually sane. 1 – 4:15 they are acting out, trying to avoid the death penalty or whatever is coming for them. whereas robert dear is determined to prove he is competent. 000113 i am not going to agree to their mental health evaluations 5:54 listen to me. do i sound incompetent? i’m a college graduate. i could out-debate any of them. 1:30 mr. dear is psychotic. psychotic people never realize that they are psychotic. as dear’s ninety-day treatment at the state hospital begins… the question is … if he’ll ever leave. if medications work and hospital staff think he’s competent to stand trial… they can alert attorneys and dear could be back in court before the ninety days are up. we continue our team coverage with krdo newschannel 13’s bart bedsole live outside the el paso county courthouse. he’s looking into why the judge made his decision… and bart, today’s ruling doesn’t mean dear is “insane”. correct… that may come later. today’s ruling is that dear is “incompetent to stand trial”… and the reason… what psychologists call “persectory delusional disorder”. in other words… dear thinks everyone is out to get him. an 8-page ruling from judge gilbert martinez details what robert dear told the psychologists who evaluated him. among other findings, they said, “he feels the judge is being operated by a higher power and his counsel is working for the federal government.” because of that, they concluded he can assist in his defense.” dan may – district attorney – it is what it is. the judge has made his ruling. district attorney dan may and his team argues the defense did not prove dear was incompetent to stand trial… but he respects the judge’s ruling… and hopes the case can eventually move forward. dan may – district attorney – if he’s found to be competent, then the court proceedings will go ahead. while he’s incompetent, the court proceedings are essentially at a standstill. carolann figone – i don’t like him. i don’t like him at all. emt carolann figone is disappointed by the ruling… not just because she was on lockdown for 10 hours inside a bank… changed forever from watching the shooting unfold at the clinic in november … but because she knows the relatives of the victims… need justice for closure. carolann figone – from what i hear, they’re going to evaluate him every 90 days. and i hope on the 91st day, he’s gonna be that guy we can take to trial. in his ruling, the judge acknowledged that dear’s frequent outbursts in court were a factor. and following today’s ruling… dear made another… calling the judge prejudice and a filthy animal. live out the el paso county courthouse … bart bedsole… krdo newschannel 13.
