UPDATE: Man who died in Fountain police custody was sex offender

An investigation on the Fountain Police Department is underway after a man they were attempting to arrest died on Tuesday.

Investigators tentatively identified the man as Jeremy Thompson, 45. According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigations, Thompson is a registered sex offender. Records show he was convicted of attempted first-degree sexual assault in 1998.

At around 10:40 a.m., police responded to a disturbance on the 1500 block of Prado Drive. When officers arrived, they tried to talk to Thompson, but he was reportedly being uncooperative.

While officers were arresting the man, he became unresponsive. The man was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Colorado Springs Police Department Violent Crimes and the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office was called to investigate the incident. The El Paso County Coroner’s Office will be responsible for determining how he died.
