Train hauling sand derails in northern Colorado; no injuries

Emergency crews are responding to a train derailment near an elementary school in northern Colorado.

The Poudre Fire Authority says at least nine of the Great Western train’s cars came off the tracks and tipped Sunday while hauling sand in Timnath, east of Fort Collins. No one was hurt and authorities say the train was not carrying hazardous materials. Officials say silica sand is commonly used in fracking operations.

Fire Authority Spokeswoman Madeline Noblett says it was lucky none of the surrounding homes was damaged.
