Subaru recall affects at least 60 customers, 200 unsold cars locally

A Colorado Springs Subaru dealership spent Friday notifying customers of a nationwide vehicle recall.

John Adams, director of development at Heuberger Motors, said around 60 customers have Subaru Outbacks or Legacys that possibly have defects in the steering column.

Adams said there are 350 to 400 of the vehicles unsold and parked at the dealership, and estimates half of them have the same defect.

Owners should not drive the cars because the defect could cause steering to fail, Adams said.

“We’ll send technicians out to inspect the cars and if necessary, tow them to our service department for repairs and deliver them to the owners when we finish,” he said. “We’ll provide repairs and the use of rental cars free of charge.”

Necessary parts should arrive Monday, Adams said.

“The actual repair takes only an hour or two,” he said. “But we have to schedule them. We should be finished with all of them by mid-June.”

Adams said only a limited number of vehicles is affected by the recall.

“I’ve been with Subaru nearly 20 years and this is the first recall we’ve had,” he said.

Adams said Friday became busy at the dealership as word of the recall spread.

“Our traffic by phone and on the lot probably doubled today,” he said.

Adams said customer vehicles will be repaired before the unsold vehicles.

Heuberger is commonly considered the nation’s top seller of Subaru vehicles.
