Missing woman’s mom reacts to CBI possibly taking over her daughter’s case

A mom could be getting what she wants.

As KRDO NewsChannel 13 reported, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation may take over the Kelsie Schelling disappearance case from Pueblo police.

“That’s something we have asked for three years basically, to have Kelsie’s case turned over to another agency,” Schelling’s mother, Laura Saxton, said.

This comes after “20/20” aired a report Friday about Schelling.

Schelling was last seen at a Pueblo Walmart in February 2013.

She was pregnant when she drove to Pueblo to visit her boyfriend Donthe Lucas in Pueblo and hasn’t been seen since.

It has been more than three years since Schelling went missing, now Pueblo police feel it’s time to hand over the case to the CBI.

“We have done everything possibly we could do with it,” Sgt. Ken Espinoza said.

The possible transfer of the case came after police looked over clues and leads in her disappearance. “20/20” revealed police investigators interviewed Lucas but after two sessions when he was questioned about Schelling’s whereabouts, he asked for a lawyer and the interview stopped.

Saxton said neither the CBI or Pueblo police have informed her that the case has changed hands, but she is hopeful the CBI can look in different areas Pueblo police haven’t.

“I feel like there have been certain processes that should have gone through that weren’t done and probably as far as forensics and those things that weren’t done,” Saxton said.

Saxton said one example of where she hopes the CBI could look is at the GPS navigation system inside her daughter’s car.

She hopes the CBI can bring closure for her family.

“That is our No. 1 goal. That’s what we want. That’s what’s going to bring us peace is to bring her home,” Saxton said.

Pueblo police said one of the reasons for possibly turning over the case is the rise in criminal investigations since 2013, which has given police less time to investigate Schelling’s case.
