Sick of the spotlight: Green Mountain Falls

Still no officers, but a lot of questions in Green Mountain Falls.

The entire Police Department resigned in April, right after the new mayor was elected.

Since then, the small town has made national headlines.

“It’s incredible how much this story has gotten. It’s been covered in Africa, Australia and India,” said Jane Newberry, newly elected mayor of Green Mountain Falls.

Newberry says all the attention came to her small town after, “The only officer we had, the only full time marshal, resigned,” Newberry said.

The town’s three reserve officers also left. Newberry said they left because they had no supervision.

“The marshal has not spoken to me before or since, so I really don’t know why he resigned,” Newberry said.

“He didn’t like working for this particular government, the new mayor,” said Ben Stevens, who lives in Green Mountain Falls.

“I have a feeling that it was a deeply personal decision for him,” Newberry said.

“Because of this national exposure I’ve had more than 40 inquires. People want to come work in our town,” Newberry said.

The mayor and the town board are meeting on May 17.

They will set a date on which the marshal position will be filled.
