Senate led presidential primary bill dies, House version likely to see same fate
A version of a bill that would bring a presidential primary back to Colorado voters in 2020, died Monday night in the waning hours of the legislative session.
Sources tell KRDO NewsChannel 13 the bill, which was co-sponsored by a bipartisan effort in the Colorado Senate was killed after lawmakers couldn’t reach consensus.
A Hosue-led version that some lawmakers disliked from the start is expected to go down in defeat Tuesday morning.
The coalition “Let Colorado Vote” could bring the presidential primary question to voters on the November ballot. But, lawmakers on both sides are concerned the group will create a measure to allow an open primary, giving independents the vote and Democrats and Republicans to crossover in primary elections.
KRDO NewsChannel 13’s Eric Fink talked with Sen. Michael Merrifield and Sen. Owen Hill both of Colorado Springs about several key bills that were killed along party lines this spring.
The session ends Wednesday.
