Army reports sheds light on 2015 fatal crash at Fort Carson

A new report released from the US Army sheds new light on a fatal crash in 2015 during a training exercise at Fort Carson.

Much of the report is redacted, including conclusions about what exactly caused the Stryker vehicle to go over a cliff and roll 250 feet down a hill.

However, it does say that medical personnel recommended that the victim, Staff Sergeant Justin Holt, not be a part of the exercise due to an unspecified medical condition.

Sgt. Tim Riney survived the crash.

Now retired from the military, Riney believes someone needs to be held accountable for sending Holt and the other five soldiers out that night.

“Someone should go to jail for criminal negligence or something,” he says, “because they circumnavigated the checks and balances in place to keep people from being forced out into the field while injured.”

Riney’s father added that his son didn’t want to talk about the crash until he got out of the army entirely out of fear that it would have compromised his medical treatment.

Riney says this was far from the only time that the completion of an exercise was put ahead of the safety of the soldiers at Fort Carson, and he hopes the crash report starts a dialogue to change that.
