Students send classmate to Legoland

An 11-year-old Colorado Springs boy, who’s never had the chance to travel because of illness, will soon board a plane thanks to his classmates.

Wyatt Leitzel tells KRDO that he loves art, Lego’s and his friends.

“He wants to prove to everyone that he is special, but he is normal,” said Wyatt’s father, Brandon.

Wyatt’s challenges started even before he was born.

“He had a hole in his heart. He also had a stroke before he was born,” Brandon said.

Wyatt has survived 13 surgeries, and another big procedure is coming up.

“I need a new piece of my heart. This surgery I’m having will be my 14th one,” Wyatt said.

“He’s had a hard time in life,” said Brandon.

Fortunately Wyatt has amazing friends at Woodmen Roberts Elementary School.

“If you’re ever sad he’ll cheer you up with all these jokes,” said classmate, Nolan Hollis.

The idea to send Wyatt on a trip to Legoland was Nolan’s.

“I didn’t know it would work this fast, everybody has been donating,” said Hollis.

So far the leadership group at the school has raised more than $9,000.

“I know he loves Lego’s so, i was like, legoland is an awesome place,” Hollis said.

“Both my wife and I were just in tears,” Brandon said.

“Wyatt is just one them. That’s the most powerful piece for me. They want Wyatt to have the experience they get to have,” said Jennifer Sterk, principal of the school.

Wyatt and his father say they’re incredibly thankful to everyone who’s donated.

“Thank you for helping me for many many years,” Wyatt said.

Wyatt’s classmates are hoping to raise $10,000 for his trip to California. The students’ leadership group at Woodmen Roberts Elementary is leading his fundraiser.
