Is it time for planting yet?
With the nice weather, it’s tempting to plant your garden.
But it’s too soon for some of your favorite fresh vegetables.
Amanda Terrell is ready to plant, though.
She has some ideas for her little garden this year.
“I love Swiss chard,” she said.
And that’s not all she plans to plant: “I plan to plant the lettuce in that lower spot (over) there,” she said.
She already has some plants in the ground.
“I hope I still have onions,” she said.
Master Gardener Larry Stebbins says now is a good time to plant certain vegetables.
“We’re ready to plant onions. And we say everything that has roots or leaves can be put in the ground now,” he said.
It’s best to wait for the other veggies and fruits until after the last frost, typically around Memorial Day.
But if you don’t have a plot of land big enough to plant your vegetables, Pikes Peak Urban Gardens may have a solution for you.
This little plot on Arcadia Street on the north side of Colorado Springs is one of about two dozen in the city.
Their purpose is greater than just growing fresh vegetables.
Stebbins says, “What we really try to do is to bring communities together, to work together to form a unit.
Terrell can’t wait to get a little dirt on her hands.
“When I found out this was opening across the street it was an opportunity that I had to find out about,” she said.
So she and her neighbors can grow better vegetables and better neighborhoods at the same time.
Even if we do get another snow storm this month, Stebbins says your plants in the ground should be OK – especially if they’re covered.
You can hear Stebbins on the Urban Farm and Garden Show on KRDO NewsRadio 105.5 FM and 1240 AM Saturdays at 6 a.m. and again on Sunday at 1 p.m.
