Smashed car windows in quiet Colorado Springs subdivision
Car windows were smashed to pieces and valuables inside are gone after the Gold Hill Mesa subdivision was targeted Monday night.
“I’m angry. I’m still in shock,” said Jon Felder, who had his car broken into, and his valuables stolen.
Neighbors could find broken glass on the street.
“They smashed the window and grabbed the bag,” said Felder.
Felder’s computer, wallet, passport and work documents were inside of the stolen bag.
“I feel violated,” Felder said.
At least three other people are sharing that feeling, after their cars were broken into.
“Within the past few days, it seems like it’s happening in the Gold Hill area,” said Vanessa Jones, a community service officer of Colorado Springs.
Up to 15 car break-ins have been reported within the subdivision over the past week. But cars aren’t the only target
We spoke with Tom Witt who was busy building a new house in the subdivision.
Witt says his tools were recently stolen. They were worth $6,000.
“I’ve always considered stealing a man’s tools to be pretty low. Someone is definitely taking advantage, and thinking that it’s a easy target,” said Witt.
“That’s the catch-22 of being such a safe and close-knit community. These criminals believe that they can come in here unnoticed, and that is absolutely not the case,” said Stephanie Edwards, the vice president of the subdivision.
Believe it or not, officers say some people are leaving their cars unlocked, while others are keeping valuables inside.
“If someone looks in a vehicle and sees nothing of value they’re going to move on,” Jones said.
Police say car break-ins are happening frequently right now, all across the city.
Meanwhile, in Gold Hill Mesa, neighbors are forming a neighborhood watch.
