District’s proposal comes ahead of new legislation
schools could soon be allowed in colorado. tonight, a bill requiring colorado schools to accomodate students with medical marijuana prescriptions.. just needs the governor’s signature. state senators approved the legislation today.. and governor hickenlooper has already expressed support for it. this issue is very close to the heart of a colorado springs mother only on 13.. she talked with krdo newschannel 13’s greg miller about it. jaxson stormes suffers from seizures, there are days he can’t walk. there are days it brings his mother, jenni stormes, to tears. 12:53: 62 drug combinations… it doesn’t work. and i can’t wait. jaxson was diagnosed with dravet syndrome – his symptoms improved after cannabis- enfused medication. 13:08: i can try cannabis and it’s working. but the 12-year- old was suspended from his d49 school after stormes accidentally packed a cannabis- infused medication in a lunch last year. but now – she may be able to – accident or not. jax’s law, named after another child last year, allows certified caregivers to administer the medication. another piece of legislation before governor john hickenloope r would force schools to come up with policies allowing cannabis medicines on campus. sot: the law says they must make an appropriate accomodation. standup: all of the school districts in colorado are waiting for the legislation before drafting that policy – except d49. 1:03 we’ve learned that some of these students loose 2,000 minutes a year outside of the classroom. their caregiver having to come get them. the district’s policy only allows cannaboid products to be administered by a certified caregiver… who would be allowed on campus if necessary. but since marijuana is illegal under federal law, there is concern about a loss of federal funding… d49 receives about 7 million dollars a year. 2:41: there is a cease and decist, so if the federal government does step in and tell us to stop we can and not lose that. stormes doesn’t think that’ll happen. 3:51 new jersey and maine, both states that have a program where schools are allowing caregivers to administer cannabis, they’re not losing their funding. and that this measure will get her son the help he needs. the falcon d-49 school board will approve that policy at a meeting next the falcon d-49 school board will approve that policy at a meeting next thursday night. for links to the policy, go to krdo.com.
