Some passengers unhappy with changes to Springs bus routes

Mountain Metropolitan Transit has unveiled its new bus routes, but many passenger are not on board with the changes.

Service changes took effect May 1. Changes include an increase in frequency to 15-minute service along Nevada Avenue; added Saturday service to route 10; restructuring of routes 3, 6, 8, 12, 15, 16 and 39; and a transfer policy revision.

“This is the second release of 15-minute service. We put 15-minute service on Route 5 from downtown to the Citadel Mall Transfer Center last spring and saw a 26 percent increase in ridership. We expect to see similar results for the Nevada Avenue corridor,” MMT Director Craig Blewitt said in a news release.

However, many passengers aren’t liking the changes so far.

“People have to walk all the way to Nevada just to catch a bus, and if we do have to take a 6, we have to take two buses,” bus rider Jeannie Genakos said.

Genakos said many passengers who, like her, use a wheelchair, now have to travel farther to catch their bus. And additional transfers instead of direct routes are a hassle.

Blewitt said that while officials sympathize, having to walk to the bus stop is a typical situation and those who need it can use the Metro Mobility Program.
