UPDATE: Victim identified in Colorado Springs storage unit murder

UPDATE (04/25/16)

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the victim in a homicide investigation.

The victim has been identified as Julie Tureson, 33. The manner of death has been ruled a homicide.

The Sheriff’s Office confirms that James Woo is an ex-boyfriend of Tureson. They believe her death was premeditated.

They’re asking for information from anyone who had contact with Woo on the dating app Tinder to please contact police. He used Tinder in both San Francisco and Colorado Springs.

The Sheriff’s Office says, “We would like to express our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Julie. We would also like to thank our law enforcement partners to include the Department of Homeland Security, FBI, US State Department, Seattle Police Department, Colorado Springs Police Department, Denver Police Department and the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office for their assistance in our investigation and apprehending James Woo.”

Previous Story:

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said a person of interest in a suspicious death is now a murder suspect after a body was found Friday in a Colorado Springs storage facility.

The body was found in the 4400 block of E. Platte Avenue, just east of the Murray Boulevard intersection, by the facility manager around 9:15 a.m. Friday.

Investigators said James Woo, 38, rented a storage unit two weeks ago. His registration form listed him as living in San Francisco.

At around 6:15 p.m. Friday, investigators upgraded the case to a homicide and said Woo is the only suspect to be booked on a charge of first-degree murder.

Authorities said Woo departed on a flight from Denver to Hong Kong and was arrested Friday evening — on the plane just an hour before departure — by Homeland Security officers at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

“If he had gotten on that Hong Kong flight, getting him back would have been very difficult,” said Jacqueline Kirby of the Sheriff’s Office.

The storage facility manager said the victim had been shot and had a chemical poured over her.

“I’m sure there will be more charges added,” Jaworski said. “We still have a lot of work to do. This is just the very beginning.”

Jaworski said Woo is a U.S. citizen suspected of placing the body into the victim’s minivan and parking it in the storage unit.

It’s unclear when the vehicle was parked there.

“I don’t believe (Woo) knew that we found the deceased,” Jaworski said. “I give credit to my detectives and supervisors who did an outstanding job.”

Jaworski said investigators became aware of the case Friday morning when the victim’s family filed a missing person report.

“The victim is not any of the other local people recently reported missing,” he said.

Robert Ediger owns an auto body shop next door to the crime scene and said the incident is disturbing.

“When it happens this close to the business it hits home, makes you wonder what was going on when it happened and where we were at the time,” he said. “Scary that it could have been during business hours.”

Jaworski said detectives will travel to Seattle and question Woo, presumably before efforts to extradite him to Colorado begin.

Authorities cleared the crime scene at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
