2-alarm fire extinguished by firefighters

Firefighters in Colorado Springs are investigating a 2-alarm fire that began in the Rockrimmon area just after 1 a.m. Saturday.

Witnesses reported hearing an explosion just before the fire started at a home in the 6900 block of Blackhawk Place.

Firefighters say the fire had engulfed the inside of the house when they arrived, and they fought defensively to keep the flames from spreading.

“I was running around my house, getting the cat, getting the cat box, getting all my important papers. I thought ‘my God, if there is a fire up there at that house, it could spread,'” neighbor Debra Hill said.

The fire was extinguished just before 2:30 a.m. The house suffered heavy damage and was declared unsafe to enter. None of the nearby homes were damaged and the flames did not spread into the surrounding brush.

Two people were able to escape the building. The were evaluated at the scene, but their conditions were not released

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
