CDOT helps Pueblo schools become safer

North Mesa Elementary in Pueblo is about to get a lot safer, thanks to a $200,000 grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The grant came with the help of the Pueblo County Commissioners and will help build a sidewalk near the school.

Right now, students are forced to take the bus or have their parents drop them off at school because it’s too dangerous for them to walk along the side of the road.

Principal Jeff Howes says it’s a great leap in safety for the students.

“Kids walk to school, and out here that’s not something that can happen. And so again, I think, as a parent and as a principal and somebody involved in the schools, I think it gives you a peace of mind knowing that can happen.”

Construction will begin in the next few weeks.
