After upset win at state convention, Glenn looks to primary race

Perhaps the biggest surprise candidate at the GOP state convention was U.S. Senate contender and El Paso County Commissioner Darryl Glenn.

“I am an unapologetic Christian conservative, pro-life, Second Amendment-loving American who will beat Michael Bennet,” he told 4,000 Colorado Republican delegates at the state convention inside the Broadmoor World Arena.

Glenn pulled a major upset, getting 70 percent of the vote and earning his spot on the primary ballot June 28.

Glenn’s Hummer is now back in his driveway and he’s had just a few minutes at home in Colorado Springs to decompress.

“We’re ready. It’s about leading,” he said.

One of the memorable lines in his speech goes right after Hillary Clinton.

“I am firmly committed to making sure we remove her from her pantssuit and put her in a bright orange jumpsuit,” Glenn said.

The former Springs city councilman and Air Force veteran trails in the money game against better-funded primary candidates from the Denver Metro area. And if he wins the primary in June, Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) has put away millions for his re-election bid.

Glenn contends if he’s lucky enough to get elected to Washington, he does not plan to often work across the aisle.

“That phrase really refers to selling out on your goals and essentially your principles,” Glenn said.

In the June 28 primary, Glenn will face former state lawmaker John Keyser, former Aurora City Councilman Ryan Frazier, Colorado Springs businessman Robert Blaha and former Colorado State University Athletic Director Jack Graham.
