Southern Colorado Democrats vie for delegate slots at National Convention in Philadelphia

Retired school teacher and principal, Judi Ingelido, has supported Hillary Clinton for decades. Ingelido proudly displays her “Hillary For President sign from 2008.

This weekend she’s running to be a national delegate at the state convention in Loveland, where she hopes to earn enough support for a memorable trip to see Clinton accept the Democratic Party nomination in Philadelphia this July.

“I think it’s going to be historic,” Ingelido said. “This is the year that finally we’re going to bereak that glass ceiling. Hillary is going to kick glass.”

A Bernie Sanders delegate, Mike Maday, of Colorado Springs, agrees the glass ceiling argument is a compelling one, but he backs Sanders, because he believes the Vermont Senator enthuses the Democratic base and is the most electable Democrat to beat the Republican nominee in the fall.

“He has motivated a lot of people that haven’t been involved in the process before,” Maday said. “This summer we’re going to be nominating the best candidate to face Donald Trump, maybe Cruz. That’s an important decision to be made and I want to be a part of that.”

39 delegates from Colorado will go to the national convention pledged to Sanders, while 27 will be pledged to Clinton.

The delegates will be elected Friday at the congressional district assemblies and Saturday at the state convention in Loveland.

There are also 12 superdelegates on the Democratic side in Colorado.
