City and county crews gear up for storms

With this weekend’s winter weather rolling in we checked in with Colorado Springs and El Paso County to see how they’re preparing for the storm.

We caught up with Corey Farkas of the city of Colorado Springs public works department Thursday. He was at a preparedness event and says they will be ready

“It’s that time of year where we never know what we get. We have 70 and sunny one day and snow the next. We’re gonna be prepared for whatever is thrown at us with the resources that we have available. So we’ll have all the plows hooked up and we’ll be on standby,” he said.

We also caught up with El Paso County’s public works department. The trucks and plows are ready to go.

Scot Cuthbertson explained the plan.

“When our trucks come in today from their normal operations they’ll load up and prepare for snow removal operations and then our supervisors will make a decision when to go to split shifts and bring in crews,” he said.

The county has 11,000 cubic yards of salt and 5,000 tons of salt/sand mixture in their main warehouse and more if they need it.

However, the big hope with this storm is that the roads are warm and the snow will melt quickly.
