Women-Only Taxi service
A new women-only taxi service called “Chariot for Women” is scheduled to launch nationwide this month.
The Uber-like service will only have females in the driver’s seat, with the goal of giving passengers peace of mind. The company’s idea comes after increasing complaints of sexual harassment and violence taking place during cab rides.
The car service will also cater to mothers with young children. In addition to mothers and daughters, Chariot for Women will also serve moms with boys under the age of 13.
“Men will kind of look in the rear view mirror at me and smile, ask if I have a boyfriend,” said Samantha Soccomanno, a frequent Uber passenger.
“You don’t know if they will reach over and grab you, they’re always looking in the mirror at you,” said Elizabeth Caplan, another frequent Uber and cab user.
Chariot for Women is exclusively for women passengers and female drivers. No men are allowed, with the exception of children under the age of 13.
“I think it’s great, I would use it,” said Soccomanno
“As a female getting in a car with a female, it’s more comfortable automatically,” said Caplan.
The women-only car service isn’t just for the safety of passengers; it’s also meant to help female drivers feel safe.
“I do know a few women who want to drive cabs, but they express that drawback,” said Alex Fenroy, a cab driver in Colorado Springs. Fenroy says many women are nervous to drive for a car service.
Chariot for Women isn’t the first of its kind. “She Taxi” tried the same thing in New York City, but it shut down because of accusations of discrimination.
“You can’t limit hiring to just one gender,” said Joseph Sulman, an Employment Law Specialist.
Chariot for Women says its business is well within the law, serving an essential social interest. The company hits the road in all 50 states on April 19.
