Man accused of killing Castle Rock teen at Arizona university released from jail
A man who is accused of shooting four people at Northern Arizona University in October of last year was released from jail until his trial.
KNXV-TV reports that Steven Jones was allowed to leave jail on the conditions that he be monitored using GPS, have a curfew, is not allowed to have guns and is not allowed to have a passport.
Jones was indicted on a first degree murder charge after police say he killed Colin Brough. The three other people he is accused of shooting survived.
Brough was shot twice, once in the chest and once in the shoulder. He was a freshman at NAU and graduated from Castle View High School in Castle Rock in May 2013.
Friends stopped at his family’s home in Castle Rock on the day after the shooting to drop off cards and flowers. They said he was well-known and loved in the community.
“I just wish… I just wish it didn’t happen. It’s just ugly and tragic and not fair,” said Ronan Kirwan. “He was a people person… He was really easy to talk to. I loved him.”
Police say the shooting followed a fight in a campus parking lot. Steven Jones said he was chased by several people as he ran to his car and then he yelled at them that he had a gun.
Prosecutors say Jones gave self-serving statements and could have easily walked away from the fight rather than getting a gun from his car.
