Colorado Springs, Pueblo County reach stormwater deal
with krdo newschannel 13’s katie spencer in pueblo. she’s live along fountain creek. although the creek flow is low, you can still see the effects of flooding over the lat few years. this agreement should address the damage. it includes a list of 71 stormwater control projects… more than 60 of which will help pueblo control the stormwater. the funds can also be used to construct flood control dams and ways to prevent sediment and erosion. and this deal is binding … if colorado springs doesn’t follow through with the agreement … pueblo county can take legal action. “71 definitive projects collaborated on by both sides shows a real good faith effort on both sides to control the stormwater and to protect pueblo county citizens and the city of pueblo as well.” county commissionersar e looking for public input before they vote. a meeting is scheduled for next monday at 1:30. if the deal moves forward, the first payment of $9.6 million will be due within 30 days of the execution of the agreement. reporting live in pueblo katie spencer krdo nc 13. in colorado springs, mayor suthers told city council today about the half billion dollar stormwater agreement.. saying it is not optional. krdo newschannel 13’s bonnie silkman was there. she joins us live from the creek tonight in colorado springs. bonnie? mayor suthers says the rain run-off that we get here in colorado springs… creates problems that we don’t see… problems, that end up in pueblo. today, suthers said it’s time for the city to take care this issue that’s affecting so many in pueblo. for now, the money, 460 million dollars…over 20 years…. will come from general funds. because this is a long term agreement, the source of those funds can change. while many in pueblo are excited for the agreement, mayor suthers admits people here in colorado springs may not be so thrilled. “it’s a problem we inherited,. it’s a problem we have to deal with. the interesting thing about this, is it’s a problem we have to deal with, regardless of the public’s support. i’ll be frank about this.” according to polling, suthers says voters in colorado springs would much rather focus on road issues and fixing potholes. despite that…he says the stormwater issue is something we need to address, due to legal issues and public safety. this is a proposed agreement. springs city council and pueblo county comissioners have to vote on it by the end of this month … before the sds pipeline gets online. that’s scheduled on april 27th. in .c.s. b.s. krdo nc 13. right now
