Police: Man set on fire in Colorado Springs

The Colorado Springs Police Department is investigating after one man apparently set another man on fire.

The incident happened in the 2900 block of Geyser Drive on the south side of town. It was reported at 3:48 p.m. on April 5.

Police say the victim was taken to Memorial Hospital with serious burns. He since been transferred to a burn unit in Aurora.

Investigators say that the victim, an unidentified 30-year-old, accidentally spilled gas on himself. They say Danilo Varela, 39, asked the victim to borrow his lighter and then used the lighter to start the victim’s clothes on fire.

Varela is facing a felony assault charge.
