Park County undersheriff resigns

Park County says that Monte Gore has resigned from his post as undersheriff.

The county did not offer a reason for the resignation. Gore will receive $131,128 in severance pay.

The Associated Press reported on March 3 that Gore along with Sgt. Welles Tonjes were disciplined for incidents that happened in the aftermath of the Feb. 24 shooting death of Cpl. Nate Carrigan.

Martin Wirth, 58, killed Carrigan and injured two other deputies who were serving him an eviction notice. Wirth was killed when deputies returned fire.

Sheriff Fred Wegener told KCNC-TV that Gore was placed on leave due to concerns over the way he notified Carrigan’s father about the death.

Park County stressed Thursday that neither Gore nor Tonjes were involved in planning or executing the eviction notice, and are in no way responsible for Carrigan’s death.

Gore has been with the Park County Sheriff’s Office for fifteen years and has received numerous commendations.
