Spoofers posing as chief deputy to try to rip you off

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says scammers are using the name of a high ranking deputy to try to steal your money.

The crooks are using “spoofing” to make it look like the call is coming from the sheriff’s office, and the person or people making the calls are claiming to be Chief Deputy Todd Evans.

“When you figure out your name and title is being used to scare people, it makes me angry. It should make anyone angry,” Evans said.

The scammers claim you have outstanding warrants, owe civil judgments or owe the government money. They ask their potential victims to pay these fines using prepaid credit cards.

“It is being investigated, they will be prosecuted, and I’d love to personally arrest them if we’re able to find them,” he said.

The sheriff’s office stresses that it never calls to tell people they have a warrant, it never asks people to make payments to clear up warrants and it never calls and asks for money for any reason. The sheriff’s office says it does not collect money for any government agency.

You’re asked to call your local authorities if you have information about these calls, or if you believe you are a victim.
