Pot scholarships in Pueblo

The world’s first marijuana scholarship program is ready to go. The measure approved by Pueblo voters last November is ready for applications, and Pueblo County is now telling its high school seniors to sign up for the program. The 5 percent tax on marijuana growers is expected to raise about $3.5 million dollars by 2020, which the scholarship money available to students who plan on staying and attending college in Pueblo. The county is planning on giving out 25 of the $1,000 dollar scholarships.

Pueblo County Commissioner Buffie McFadyen shows her excitement for the new program, ” Families have had it hard here in Pueblo. We’re very excited to be part of the solution to make sure they can afford college, and also bring a lot of life to our own community.”

The Pueblo Hispanic Education Foundation is working with the county to take applications. The applications will be accepted until April 29, 2016.
